Hoopoe
Upupa epops

The hoopoe is distributed across Afro-Eurasia. It has a distinctive crest which opens like a fan, and a long bill useful to forage for insects on the ground. In western Europe, hoopoes that inhabit pine plantations can specialize in pupae of the pine processionary moth "Thaumetopoea pityocampa"

Illustration made with colour pencils on vellum Strathmore paper over a first layer of alcohol markers. Graphite was used for the branch where the hoopoe is standing on.
